On Display September 15 - October 26, 2018
Community Collage-Making Event and Artists Reception, Saturday, Sep 29, 3pm - 7pm

4th Street Fine Art is proud to present a salute to sensitive, evocative landscape art. “Wish You Were Here...” captures the real and unreal worlds we inhabit, in fine, poetic brushwork. Each artist uses their technique to communicate the essence of the places they portray, whether the last days of summer on the beach, the beauty found in quiet moments, or the places our wandering minds take us.
We’re also inviting the community in for an afternoon of collage-making. Join us to assemble your own postcards that represent the places you’d like to go. We’ll provide stacks of magazines and other needed supplies to inspire you to create your very own works of art.

A Word from the Artists:

Sherrod Blankner: “I use the ethereal colors and loose flow of watercolor to render the feeling of fading summer days.”

It’s been a summer of travel for Sherrod, so she has turned to watercolor for a portable art experience. From Tennessee, to Kansas, to Michigan, Sherrod has taken her camera and paints with an eye for the beauty of the region. She strives to capture the moment when the traveller is arrested by something in their new environment. Some have described her paintings as “sorrowful,” or “empathic,” for noticing something that will probably pass in time.

Maggie Hurley: “Since I was a little girl, I’ve been easily spellbound by the beauty in the world around me. From the suburbs of Richmond to the waterfalls and rocky landscapes of Iceland, lately I find myself wanting to paint everything I see. Perhaps this is some desperate attempt to preserve a world that seems to be in peril.”

Maggie’s landscapes are done in oil. She’s taken to painting on small Pergo samples. These smaller works are about the same size as a postcard, or the photos one might find stashed away in a desk drawer or hall closet.

Mike Young: Sometimes the places we go are just in our heads. Our minds race through forests, down city streets, and over piles of work. We are consumed by our thoughts and can be whisked away to new and interesting places, sometimes environments we can only dream of. Or our minds trod wearily down mundane, worn out paths, where our everyday anxieties and fears play on a continuous loop. All this without needing to move a muscle.

These paintings and drawings are fantastical expressions of people absorbed in their thoughts, imagining a different world or just letting feelings wash over them. They are reminders that even if the world feels oppressive, or your life full of sunshine, sometimes it’s just all in your head.
