Settling Show

Picture
Reception: July 20th 6 - 8 pm

4th Street Fine Art is pleased to present, “Settling,” a show celebrating the latest work of Prabin Badhia and Maggie Hurley. The Artists’ Reception will take place July 20th at the 4th Street Fine Art Gallery, located at 2000 Fourth St, Berkeley, CA from 6pm – 8pm. While distinctly different with regard to style, Hurley’s and Badhia’s work is extremely complementary.

“Lately I’ve been inspired by the sea: I find the ocean to be grounding. It’s a place of elegance, power, and grace amidst constant change. There is something settling about the sea for me, and creating the work for this show has been very meditative. I swim a lot, and growing up, I spent most of my time in the ocean. The feeling that comes from taking a deep breath and ducking beneath a giant wave that seemed poised to destroy you, but emerging unscathed on the other side, was somehow reassuring; like if I could survive that, I could survive anything. Similarly, hitting pause on the whirlwind of life and taking some time to watch that expansive horizon line that is the Pacific calms every frayed nerve,” said Maggie Hurley, a 4th Street Fine Arts Artist.

“I like the gestures, contours, and volume of the human form. Whether the model‘s pose is active or passive, I seek to convey the dynamism and movement of the body. I bring that to action on my canvas - any size, any shape, any gender.  Since my college days, I have made more than 100,000 sketches. Each time I draw or paint, I express the forms in a different way. I obsessively challenge myself to get maximum expression with minimum application through bold strokes, unedited lines.  In addition to my oil paintings, I'm exhibiting my charcoal live model drawings which gives a sense of complete form with incomplete strokes. In this series, my process is to follow the shadow and ignore the light. I’m still moving - I'm still evolving. I am not settled yet. ”
