About the Artist:
Several of these prints came from Philip Zike's travels with his wife to Guatemala "when it was dangerous." Others came from his work with well-known photographers like Jim Goldberg and Michael Kenna. Phil's work was selected by the Alameda County Arts Commission, selected from over 3,000 images, and hangs now in the Hall of Records in downtown Oakland. His work also won in the nature category in the Frank Bette competition held yearly in Alameda.

During his lifetime, Phil studied with well known photographers, Jim Goldberg and Michael Kenna. His work was exhibited at different venues including the Canessa Gallery in San Francisco, and at curated shows at  Berkeley City College, the Alameda Library and at Frank Bette Art Center in Alameda.

He developed his own prints in his darkroom with the equipment his father bought for him.  His day job was teaching in public an private schools.  He was one of the founding teachers for the Exploratorium Physics Teachers' Institute in San Francisco.

He received 22 fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities through his teaching.  In 2016, the Alameda Arts Commission selected two of his photographs for purchase from 3,200 images.   The same year his photograph won in the nature category the Frank Better On Camera event.

Philip was a teacher at Concord High School and lived in Oakland with his wife and daughter near Lake Merritt which he photographed often.
