Jenny Balisle “LOVE RAGE” Custom cross-stitch 4" x 4.5" x 1" $150.00 2021 In a rare example of accountability, Derek Chauvin was convicted in the murder of George Floyd. Defeating privilege and demanding equality becomes an exhaustive effort to exert justice. From love to rage, a complex range of emotions surface. We must demand the highest standards to preserve humanity. https://www.jennyebalisle.com |
Téa Chai Beer “Grappling” Charcoal on paper 11" x 14" $1,000.00 2021 My work explores how uncomfortable, complex and sometimes contradictory emotions and psychological states are expressed, held, and hidden by and in the body, particularly in the aftermath of trauma. During COVID lockdown, when many of us spent significant amounts of time with no one but ourselves, I began to confront and embrace aspects of myself that I had never had the space, time, or courage to face before that prolonged isolation. Through imagery of entangled, clinging fighters, I explore themes of self-conflict and self-love that hold opposing emotional states in each hand. https://teachaibeer.com |
Renee Bott Dinner Plate Black Acrylic on paper 17" x 17" x 0" $2,500.00 2021 Statement: My work is based on the minute and detailed lines found in etchings and engravings from the 15-17th century. I collect my source materials from museums, antique print dealers, and private collections. I photograph the prints and use Photoshop to digitally modify the images, which serve as general outlines for my compositions. Often book pages provide the underlying armature for many of my works. I overlay the digitally enlarged image on top of the book pages, which are mounted to a canvas or backing material. The content of the text often offers inspiration for the image. Selectively lining out the text with paint or ink allows me to develop a composition that is woven into the text. The common themes found in my work are based on my appreciation for both engravings and handwritten cursive. In my work, I enjoy thinking about how both these art forms were ubiquitous tools for communication in the past, and how obsolete they are today. https://www.reneebott.com |
Kim Cardoso Fiddletown Encaustic and oil on wood panel 24" x 24" x 1.5" $700.00 2021 Statement: Fiddletown is a painting about a place that has a hold on me. It is part of my 1000 Series- works inspired by my obsession with a swath of California’s volcanic landscape at an elevation of about 1000 feet. I start with a stain painting of oil on wood to capture the feel of hills and rocks, let it cure, and then add encaustic medium and incised lines to show relation and separation. I am an artist and midwife using luminous materials to create a space of peace. Interested in dividing and connecting, past and present, my work communicates the sensory experience of these themes. Drawing upon my experience as a metalsmith, I savor the craft-like method of encaustic painting. With fire, I fuse translucent wax, pigment, and small ephemera in layers of color. The process mirrors the self care I need for a giving life, as each piece is constructed, heated, carved, and built again. I live and paint on an urban farm in Oakland, California and continue to work in community health. https://kimcardosoart.com |
