About the Show
“In the Company of Trees” is an homage to the tree. We are all drawn to nature; to the living things themselves and the process. When we are in nature, we question our superiority in the world, and it never ceases to surprise and move us. We think about our role in the world, and come to understand how diverse the environment around us is.
In literature, we meet trees that stand for everything: immortality, strength, family. In “The Giving Tree,” the boy has a companion relationship to the tree. The iconic baobabs in “The Little Prince” metaphorically stand for our faults which can change our character. The Ents in “The Lord of the Rings” are the guardians of the forest. “The Faraway Tree” has access to magical worlds via its highest canopy.
Cindy and Hallie continue to come back to the tree emotionally, creatively and artistically. Trees are a constant source of inspiration for them. They encounter all manner of colors, shapes, sizes and environments when they consider creating their trees. In watercolor, oil, acrylic, encaustic, relief and monotype, Cindy and Hallie depict the feelings that one has when interacting with these powerful, sometimes huge, often ancient and mysterious spirits.
In the company of their trees, enjoy this fascinating and unexpected world.
